As the Mother of an 8 year old Apraxic child. We didn't start sign language until Isaac was 4. I can honestly say sign language is amazing at reducing the communication frustration(for both of us) and to see that smile on his face when I finally understand what he is saying was truely priceless.
I only wish we had the foresight to start sign language earlier. We use the Signing Time videos. (www.signingtime.com) It is so easy for our family to learn.
Tami - Nice job bringing together all of this helpful information! As a fellow pediatric SLP, I appreciate your effort to write and gather practical suggestions for parents. Thanks for posting my article on your site, and I look forward to continuing to read your posts. I also will use your site as a resource for my readers with older preschoolers since my site focuses primarily on ideas for toddlers and younger preschoolers. Congratulations again on a great site!

My son is on the autism spectrum (PDD-NOS) and was speech delayed. He is still behind on speech for a 7 year old, but he is pretty verbal. We used a lot of sign with him when he was 2-4 before his words really started flowing in. We still use some sign, wow it can really come in handy and helps bridge the gap. Even my "typical" daughter knows some sign that I taught her from learning it with her older brother. Now in preschool they are teaching the kids signs and she already knows a lot of them!

I am the owner of the company Signing Families which is dedicated to supporting children, parents, educators and other people who have the desire and need to learn American Sign Language. Many of our students are parents or educators who live or work with individuals with developmental and medical disabilities.
As a School Psychologist with over twenty years of working in the field of hearing impairment and special education I offer a unique perspective for teaching sign language. I understand the needs of families that are stretched thin financially and emotionally. I also acknowledge that many of our families are from homes in which English is not their first language. Please note that we have a top selling DVD that is TRI-lingual. We offer our new DVD, "Baby, Toddler and Preschool Sign Language" in English and Spanish narrative with sign language. This DVD has been recognized by numerous organizations as being extremely helpful to families (among others) to learn ASL in a time and cost efficient manner. We have received much feedback that our products offer the most for the dollar and that the instruction is presented in a clear, easy to learn, interesting and fun manner. Harris Communications, who is one of many national distributors for our company, recently contacted us to let us know that we had one of their top selling DVDs at Deaf Nation and that they sold out.
I would welcome the opportunity to work with yourparents from your organization. Feel free to contact me at the email above or via the information on our website. Please note that I do not provide psychological consultations.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
