About Me

2009family.jpg

I began this blog in an attempt to help parents be able to best guide their children in the development of speech and language. I'd like to do this by providing some guidelines and activities to encourage development in this area.  I additionally would like to provide parents with some reasurrance about when it's necessary and appropriate to seek a speech-language evaluation and when it's not.

If you have a child already in speech and langauge therapy, you might find some useful activities here that you can do at home with your child to help facilitate and maybe even expidite the therapy process.

I received my Masters Degree from California State University, Northridge in 1990 and have since workied in many settings including schools, clinics, private practices, hospitals, nursing homes and home health with both children (developmental & rehabilitative) and adults (rehabilitative). I currently live in Denver, Colorado with my 2 children.

Hi Tami,

My daughter is just turning seven and I have noticed over the last few months I cannot understand her words that have "or" together. For example, four sounds like fur, door sounds like dur. I do not hear any other articulation problems. People always would say that she had a cute accent, but suddenly there are many words I cannot understand. I have been trying to search the web for suggestions but cannot find anything, and then I came across your site. Just checking to see if you have advice on what to do next.

Thank you,
Marissa

Tami @ 9:37 pm

Hi Marissa,

Since your daughter is already 7 and not picking up this vowel r combination, I would encourage you to take her for some private speech therapy. She probably won't need much to get this corrected, but the public school won't provide her with speech therapy as this is most likely not impacting her education. Where do you live? I can possibly help you find some resources in your area.
