About Me

2009family.jpg

I began this blog in an attempt to help parents be able to best guide their children in the development of speech and language. I'd like to do this by providing some guidelines and activities to encourage development in this area.  I additionally would like to provide parents with some reasurrance about when it's necessary and appropriate to seek a speech-language evaluation and when it's not.

If you have a child already in speech and langauge therapy, you might find some useful activities here that you can do at home with your child to help facilitate and maybe even expidite the therapy process.

I received my Masters Degree from California State University, Northridge in 1990 and have since workied in many settings including schools, clinics, private practices, hospitals, nursing homes and home health with both children (developmental & rehabilitative) and adults (rehabilitative). I currently live in Denver, Colorado with my 2 children.

Marissa @ 7:59 pm

Hi Tami,

My daughter is just turning seven and I have noticed over the last few months I cannot understand her words that have "or" together. For example, four sounds like fur, door sounds like dur. I do not hear any other articulation problems. People always would say that she had a cute accent, but suddenly there are many words I cannot understand. I have been trying to search the web for suggestions but cannot find anything, and then I came across your site. Just checking to see if you have advice on what to do next.

Thank you,
Marissa

Tami @ 9:37 pm

Hi Marissa,

Since your daughter is already 7 and not picking up this vowel r combination, I would encourage you to take her for some private speech therapy. She probably won't need much to get this corrected, but the public school won't provide her with speech therapy as this is most likely not impacting her education. Where do you live? I can possibly help you find some resources in your area.

Hi Tami,

I am a graduate of Cal State Northridge in 2008 with my Bachelors Degree. I am now applying to CSUN for my Masters degree in Communication Disorders and Sciences. I work with early childhood intervention ages 18 months to 3 years of age. I was wondering what you think about the SLP-Assistant license program, and if you know whether or not I am able to practice in the medical field or not for instance a rehabilitation center in CA?
I just wanted to get your opinion on this , when I saw that you graduated from CSUN I thought maybe she knows?
Thanks for all of your help.

Hi,
My son is 3 and half years old. He has problem in framing sentences by his own, Otherwise he is good in vocabulary, alphabets, colors, counting even addition and subtraction of small numbers, singing nursery rhymes, prayers etc. He even takes all commands like keep the dish in sink, wash hands, throw paper in dustbin. He recognizes and knows the name of every member of the house also he knows the house numbers of all his friends living in society. He also knows few spellings of words like 'my, to, top, and, cat, dog, top, god'. His teacher also tells me that he is good in recognizing alphabets and numbers and he is first one to recognize any alphabet or number shown in the class.

But when it comes to framing of sentences by his own or telling stories or if ask him what he learned in the school he is not able to tell me e.g. if he has learnt formation of alphabet D he will not say "Mamma I learnt D". He will just tell me "Mamma D, Baby D and friend D" Or like if he needs a chocolate he will never say "Mamma I need chocolate" he will just say one word "chocolate". Please help me, how should I help my child to help him framing sentences and be talkative.
Worried Mom,
Dimple

Hi Tami,

My child is not able to speak sentences. He is 5 yrs old.

Docs have told us that he is having symptoms of a Down's child.

Kindly help me out. If there are some CDs which can be used for speech therapy on computer it would be great.

Would greatly appreciate your advise/help.

March 30, 2012

Tami @ 10:09 am

Hi Harish,

I think the best thing for you to do it take your child to a speech pathologitst for an evaluation. It sounds like you were told by a doctor, but I would really encourage you, if you haven't already, to take your son for a speech/language or developmental evaluation. You can ask your doctor for a referral or you can call your local school district. There are private clinics you can go to or you can also scedule an evaluation at Children't Hospital. Maybe this article will help -

Good luck to you.
